The Life and Vision of Henk Peeters

Born in The Hague, Henk Peeters was a Dutch artist and a central figure of the Nul movement. After studying Fine Art at the Koninklijke Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten in The Hague, he dedicated much of his career to teaching, serving at the Art Academy in Arnhem from 1957 until 1972. As a highly active member of the Dutch Nul group, Peeters acted as a vital organizer, establishing international contacts and coordinating exhibitions at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. His involvement extended to collaborations with international groups and artists such as the German ZERO, the Italian Azimuth, Yves Klein, Yayoi Kusama, and Lucio Fontana. He also initiated the utopian project "Zero on Sea", which featured over fifty participating artists from more than ten countries.

Artistic Technique and Philosophy

Peeters sought to create art that made the viewer conscious of their environment through a sensitive raising of consciousness. His work often utilized modern, clean, industrial materials like plastic and nylon, frequently employing ready-mades sourced from inexpensive stores. He explored the tactile qualities of materials, sometimes creating a sense of untouchability by placing mesh in front of cotton wool or sticking candle tapers behind plastic foil. His technique included "pyrographies", where he burned holes into plastic or used fire on canvases to leave traces of thick smoke. He also engaged with natural processes, incorporating light, water reflections, and elements such as ice, rain, snow, and mist. In 1961, Peeters became a work of art himself when appointed by Piero Manzoni.
