A Life Across Oceans

Alonso de Narváez was a man of the sixteenth century, a painter who moved from the familiar streets of Alcalá de Guadaíra, Spain, to the developing landscapes of the New Kingdom of Granada. His life was marked by this significant transition, settling in Tunja a few years after the city was founded in 1539. He was a man with deep roots and a growing family, marrying Ana de Prado and fathering ten children. His presence in the region was established enough that he left behind a will, which he signed on October 12, 1583, shortly before his death in Tunja.

While much of his personal life remains tucked away in historical records, his identity as a Sevillian artist is clear. He lived through a period of profound change, bringing European artistic traditions to a new territory. His existence was woven into the social and community fabric of the area, leaving a legacy that would eventually extend far beyond the local borders of the Royal Audiencia.

The Creation of a Devotion

The most significant chapter of his career involves a single work created in 1562. This painting, known as Our Lady of Chiquinquirá, was rendered on a cotton canvas. Rather than relying solely on traditional imported supplies, Narváez utilized the natural resources of the land to bring his vision to life. He gathered pigments from the local soil, herbs, and flowers to achieve the colors required for his subject.

The composition of this work is specific and carries deep religious meaning. It depicts the Virgin Mary holding the child Jesus and a rosary. Surrounding the central figures are several important individuals:

  • St. Anthony of Padua
  • St. Andrew the Apostle
  • Don Antonio de Santana
  • Andrés Jadraque, the monk who commissioned the work

A Lasting Presence

The impact of Narváez's work was not immediate in a worldly sense, but it grew through spiritual significance. The image of the Virgin of Chiquinquirá became a source of intense devotion. It is said that the painting underwent a miraculous restoration after being in poor condition, an event that solidified its importance to the people of Colombia. Today, this image remains housed at the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary of Chiquinquirá, maintaining a connection to the artist's hand from centuries ago.
