Johnston’s ability to navigate both the intimate and the historical allowed him to secure significant patronage. Personal loss marked the final chapter of his life. His son, Douglas Johnston, a musician based in Glasgow, predeceased him, leaving a void in the family's private history. The artist's own end came after a brief illness. He died on 2 February 1891 at 75 Carlingford Road, Hampstead, at the age of 75.
