30 Nisan 1869'da Macaristan'ın Budapeşte kentinde Fülöp Laub adıyla dünyaya gelen Philip Alexius de László, mütevazı bir geçmişten yükselerek Avrupa kraliyet ailesinin ve aristokrasisinin en ünlü portre ressamlarından biri olmayı başardı. Yahudi kökenli olan ebeveynleri Adolf ve Johanna Laub, sırasıyla terzi ve dikişçiydiler. Sanat eğitimine devam ederken başlangıçta bir fotoğrafçı yanında çıraklık yaptı. Budapeşte'deki Ulusal Güzel Sanatlar Akademisi'ne kabul edilen sanatçı, burada Bertalan Székely ve Károly Lotz gibi ustaların yanında eğitim gördü. Münih ve Paris'te gerçekleştirdiği ileri düzey çalışmalar ise sanatsal ufuklarını genişletti.
De László’nun ilk dönem eserleri, detaylara karşı keskin bir gözlem yeteneği ve gelişmekte olan bir realizm ustalığı sergiliyordu. Sanatçının uluslararası şöhretini perçinleyen dönüm noktası ise 1900 yılında, Papa XIII. Leo portresinin Paris Uluslararası Sergisi'nde Büyük Altın Madalya ile ödüllendirilmesi oldu.
Paris'teki başarısının ardından de László, 1903 yılında Viyana'ya taşındı ve ardından 1907'de hayatının geri kalanını geçireceği Londra'ya yerleşti.
