Early Life and Training in Udine Born in Udine, Italy, in 1487, the man who would become known to history as Giovanni da Udine was originally named Giovanni Nanni. He was also referred to as Giovanni de' Ricamatori. His early years were shaped by the artistic traditions of his native city, where he began his formal training as a painter. This formative period provided the technical foundation for a career that would eventually move far
beyond the borders of Friuli. During these formative years, Giovanni da Udine studied under the guidance of Giovanni Martini. This apprenticeship allowed him to develop the fundamental skills of his craft before his trajectory shifted toward the center of the Italian Renaissance.
