Identification of Springtime by Pierre Auguste Cot

Springtime is an oil on canvas created by Pierre Auguste Cot in 1873. The work captures a man and a woman suspended in a moment of quiet intimacy. They sit upon a swing, held by ropes amidst the dense greenery of an enchanted forest. Sunlight filters through the canopy, touching the leaves and the birds that inhabit the trees. It is a scene of rebirth and the soft weight of romance.

The composition focuses on the two lovers and the organic lines of the forest. A man and a woman are the central figures, surrounded by a lush landscape of trees, leaves, and greenery. The subject matter explores the themes of love and the renewal found in nature. Every brushstroke contributes to this sense of quietude. The forest remains still around them.

Composition and Visual Elements

A single rope swing carries two lovers through an enchanted forest. They are caught in a shared gaze, their eyes locked in a quiet, private language. The girl’s dress ripples with the momentum of the swing, the fabric catching the air as she moves. Nearby, the boy’s big toe is flexed upward, a small tension in the muscle of his calf as he pumps the swing forward. This physical effort anchors the scene in a moment of constant, rhythmic motion.

The brushwork relies on soft lines and delicate colors to build a dreamlike atmosphere. Intricate details emerge from the greenery, where light filters through the canopy to touch the figures. Every leaf and limb is rendered with a precision that feels both natural and idealized. The composition relies on these subtle textures to maintain a sense of lightness. A quiet stillness exists within the movement.

History and Provenance of the Work

The canvas first met the public eye at the Salon of 1873. It was there that John Wolfe acquired the work, bringing the scene of the lovers into his own collection. The painting moved through private hands, a quiet passenger through the decades of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

In 2012, the work entered a new chapter through a gift from Steven and Alexandra Cohen. It now resides within the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Though it is held by the museum, the records indicate the work is currently owned privately.

The history of this piece is a series of quiet transfers, moving from the light of the Salon to the stillness of a private collection. It remains a singular moment of grace preserved in oil.
