The History of Coughton Court

The Throckmorton family has been associated with Coughton Court for over six centuries. The family's presence at the site began in the early 15th century, when John de Throckmorton, who served as Under Treasurer of England to Henry VI, acquired the estate through his marriage to Eleanor de Spiney. While some records suggest the family arrived in 1409, others place their establishment at the site in 1412.

The history of the estate was marked by significant upheaval during the English Civil War. During this period, Parliamentarian forces plundered and confiscated the property. Following these conflicts, the estate was restored to the Throckmorton family in 1651.

In 1946, the family transferred ownership of Coughton Court to the National Trust. This transfer included a 300-year hereditary lease, which grants the Throckmorton family the right to reside at the house and manage the property as a visitor attraction. The family continues to live at Coughton Court today.

The Architecture and Grounds

The oldest parts of the house likely date from the reign of Henry VIII. The site contains a 14th-century dovecote, and the structural history of the estate is marked by layers of occupation. Excavations conducted in 1991 identified the location of a former moat and revealed traces of prehistoric, Roman, and medieval activity beneath the current landscape.

The property encompasses 25 acres of grounds. Much of the landscape was developed by Capability Brown. The gardens are organized into several distinct areas, including rose gardens, herbaceous borders, and a bog garden. Other features include orchards with naturalised bulbs, formal gardens, a lake, and a river walk. Two churches are located within the estate grounds.

Art and Historical Collections

The collection at Coughton Court is defined by its continuity, featuring a series of 16th to 19th-century paintings that primarily consist of family portraits. These works, including pieces by artists such as Peter Lely and Nicolas de Largillière, document the lineage of the Throckmorton family over several centuries. Alongside these portraits, the house contains 17th-century tapestries and a seventeenth-century travelling library. These items reflect the domestic and intellectual life of the residents throughout the early modern period.

The historical holdings include a small group of medieval manuscripts and a selection of Throckmorton family documents. These records provide a direct link to the family's long-standing presence at the estate. Additionally, the site preserves two carved alabaster slabs; one depicts the nativity, while the other features the head of St John the Baptist alongside St Peter and St Thomas of Caterbury. The reverse of these slabs bears various 17th-century dates and the names of previous owners.

Visiting and Special Events

Regular admission to the estate is £15.50. Visitors may access various facilities including bike storage, a cafe and restaurant, and a shop. The grounds offer parkland, open spaces, and a picnic area. Children's facilities are available on site, and the property is pet friendly.

Specific seasonal events are scheduled for 2026. Gunpowder Plot Candlelight Tours will take place on Friday 6th November and Saturday 7th November. Additional Candlelight Tours are held on Friday 13th November and Saturday 14th November. National Trust Member Days are scheduled for 10 days throughout the year 2026.
