A Life of Art and Diplomacy

Sam Joseph Ntiro was a Tanzanian visual artist, diplomat, civil servant, and academic. Born in the Machame area of Hai District, in the village of Ndereny, on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, he received his education at Ndereny Nkuu Primary School and Old Moshi Secondary school. His tertiary studies took him to Makerere College of the University of East Africa, where he studied Art and Education, followed by postgraduate work at the Slade College of Fine Art, University of London.

Ntiro’s career was marked by significant roles in both the arts and international relations. He served as the first East African High Commissioner to the Court of Saint James in London for the Republic of Tanganyika from 1961 until 1964, and was also the Ambassador of Tanganyika to Ireland. In the academic sphere, he taught at Makerere College, Kyambogo Technical Institute, and the University of Dar es Salaam, where he was a founding member of the university's Department of Music, Arts and Culture.

Artistic Legacy and Recognition

As a painter, Ntiro’s work has been recognized by major international institutions. His oil painting Men Taking Banana Beer to Bride by Night is held in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York City, while the National Museum of African Art in Washington, D.C., owns his oil painting Cattle Feeding. Another of his works, Monkeys Feeding, is part of the Lakeland Arts collection.

Throughout his life, Ntiro traveled extensively, conducting research in the United States at Dillard & Xavier Universities and the University of Wisconsin at Madison. His expertise as an academic led him to serve as an external examiner for Fine Art, Art History, and other subjects across several countries, including Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, the United Kingdom, the US, Canada, Ghana, and Nigeria.
