Early Life, Family and Training Eugène Anatole Carrière enters the world on January 16, 1849, in Gournay-sur-Marne, Seine-Saint-Denis. He is the eighth of nine children born to an insurance salesman. His early years are spent in Strasbourg, where the foundations of his technical skill are laid. He receives his initial training in art at the Ecole Municipale de Dessin, working through an apprenticeship in commercial lithography. The tr
