A Life in Amersfoort

Gerrit van Stellingwerf lived a life deeply rooted in the streets of Amersfoort. Born in April 1614 to Laurens van Stellingwerff, a man who ran an inn called De Vergulde Swaen, Gerrit grew up in a bustling environment. His family life was shaped by his mother, Geertje Jans, and later by his marriage to Bijtgen Peters Borts van Buytendijck in 1645. Together, they raised five children in the Breestraat district. Life was not always easy for the painter. Financial struggles eventually forced the family to sell their two homes, leaving them to live as tenants in one of the properties they once owned. Even as he navigated these hardships, he remained a member of the local St. Lucasbroederschap, a community of artists in Amersfoort.

The Brush and the Palette

The work of Gerrit van Stellingwerf reveals a man focused on specific subjects and a particular visual language. He often turned his attention to the regents of the Sint-Joriskerk, particularly during the mid-1650s. His compositions were characterized by a preference for rectangular frames and a notable avoidance of the color pink. His output was relatively small, yet it touched upon various genres of the Dutch Golden Age:

  • Religious works, such as the altar piece De bespotting van Christus from 1643.
  • Still life paintings, including a Vanitasstilleven from 1641.
  • Drawings, such as his 1643 depiction of a ruin entrance near Rome.
  • Group portraits, most notably the 1657 work College der Kerkmeesters.

Legacy and Memory

Though he remains a lesser-known figure from the Dutch Golden Age, his presence is still felt in the city of his birth. A street in the Soesterkwartier district, the Gerrit van Stellingwerfstraat, bears his name, connecting the Soesterweg to the Noordewierweg. His art continues to require care; for instance, the painting De regenten van de Sint-Joriskerk has faced damage over the years, prompting local efforts to fund its restoration. He died in Amersfoort around 1659, leaving behind a body of work that reflects the quiet, steady realities of his era.
