Early Life, Family and Training Hendrik Willem Schweickhardt was born in 1747 in Hamm. At that time, he was known as Heinrich Wilhelm Schweickhardt. When he was about four years old, his family moved to The Hague. This move brought him into a different environment, one where the rhythms of Dutch life would eventually find their way onto his canvases. He grew up in this setting, developing the eye of a draftsman through formal instructio
n and observation. His training began under Hieronymus Lapis, who took him on as a pupil. This early guidance provided the foundation for his technical skill. Beyond the private lessons of a master, he also attended the drawing academy of the Hague Confrerie Pictura. These years of study were spent learning the mechanics of line and form.
