Born Richard Sheridan Patrick Michael Aloysius Franklin Bowling to Irish immigrant parents—his father a tailor and his mother a skilled seamstress and shopkeeper—he inherited a unique blend of cultural influences from both sides
of his family. His childhood in New Amsterdam was shaped by the rhythms of Caribbean life, the warmth of his mother’s business, and the practical skills learned assisting her in running a thriving store.
