Jankel Adler

A Life of Wandering and Witness

Born in the textile town of Lodz, Poland, Jankel Adler lived a life defined by movement and the heavy shadows of history. His early years were marked by a restless migration, beginning with a move to Belgrade in 1912, where he first learned the delicate craft of engraving under the guidance of his uncle. This period of training laid the foundation for a hand that would later master many mediums. By 1914, he had found himself in Germany, living in Barmen near his sister and studying at the college of arts and crafts. It was a time of profound formation, as he worked under Professor Gustav Wiethücher and began to find his footing within the European art scene.

The years following the Great War saw him drifting between Lodz and Germany, eventually finding a sense of place in Düsseldorf in 1922. Here, he took up a position as a teacher at the Academy of Arts, a role that placed him at the heart of a burgeoning avant-garde. It was in this academic setting that he formed a deep bond with Paul Klee, whose studio sat right next to his own. This friendship and the shared pursuit of discovery through abstraction left an indelible mark on his creative spirit. While his work began to garner recognition, including a gold medal at the 1928 exhibition “German art Düsseldorf,” the political climate in Germany grew increasingly hostile.

The Weight of Identity and Exile

The rise of the Nazi regime in 1933 forced Adler into a life of further displacement. Forced to leave Germany, he sought refuge in Paris, but the onset of World War II brought even greater upheaval. Driven by a sense of duty, he volunteered for the Polish army in France, though health struggles eventually led to his dismissal and a move toward Scotland. In the quiet of Kirkcudbright and later Glasgow, his work took on a different resonance. He found companionship in fellow Polish artists like Josef Herman, sharing the common language of Yiddish and the shared trauma of displacement.

Despite the physical distance from his homeland, the tragedy of the Holocaust remained an inescapable presence in his life. He lived with the devastating knowledge that none of his nine siblings had survived the horrors in Europe. This profound loss, combined with his experiences as a soldier, infused his later works with a certain sadness. The Germans had labeled him the "Artist of the Jews," a title that reflected his deep engagement with Jewish identity and the struggles of his people. His art became a way to process the immense grief of a shattered family and a broken continent.

Technique and Expression

Adler refused to be confined by a single method, instead embracing a wide variety of textures and forms. He moved between the precision of woodcuts and the fluidity of watercolours, often experimenting with oil paintings that incorporated sand to create a tactile, gritty surface. His subjects were diverse, ranging from the abstract to the figurative, yet they all shared a common emotional depth. Even in his most abstract compositions, there is a sense of the human condition—a presence that feels both heavy and fragile.

His artistic development was characterized by several key elements:

By the time he reached London in 1943, Adler had become a figure whose work embodied the fragmentation of the twentieth century. He died in 1949, leaving behind a body of work that captures the tension between the beauty of artistic discovery and the harsh realities of a world in conflict.
