The story of Tamoto Kenzō is one of profound resilience, where personal tragedy served as the unlikely gateway to a photographic legacy. Born in 1832 in the serene landscape of Kumano, within Japan's Mie Prefecture, Kenzō’s early life was marked by a restless curiosity about the world beyond his birthplace. At twenty-three, drawn by the magnetic pull of modernization, he journeyed to Nagasaki to immerse himself in the study of Western culture. However, it was not the academic pursuit of knowledge that would define his destiny, but a harrowing encounter with the elements. Upon relocating to Hakodate in 1859, Kenzō suffered severe frostbite that resulted in the amputation of his foot. Yet, within this moment of physical loss, a new lens emerged; the surgeon who performed the operation possessed a deep fascination with the burgeoning medium of photography, specifically the delicate art of the ambrotype. Under this mentor's guidance, Kenzō transitioned from a patient to an apprentice, finding a new way to see and record the world through light and silver.
