The Life of a Priest and Painter

Tamis Wever was born in Spierdijk, West Friesland, as the first of eight children in a family of modest means. His path was shaped by a quiet, steady preparation for religious life, beginning in 1950 at the Kleine Seminar of the Society of African Missions in Nieuw Herlaar. He eventually entered the community in 1956, studying theology and philosophy in Aalbeek. His life was marked by a physical struggle; a vaccination left him with weakened health and failing eyesight, a condition that brought a constant fear of total blindness. This vulnerability may have informed the way he looked at the world through thick lenses. He was ordained a priest in December 1962, though his plans to serve as a missionary in Ghana were cut short by his health. Instead, he turned his attention to teaching biblical exegesis and the Old Testament at the Free University in Amsterdam and the Catholic Theological University in Utrecht.

The Texture of the Work

His hands were rarely still, moving between the heavy application of oil and the delicate touch of watercolor. He did not stick to a single way of seeing. His output was vast, reaching approximately 11,000 works that explored the tension between the human form, eroticism, and deep theological themes. He worked with various materials to capture what he saw:

In his paintings, there is a sense of the physical process. In some works, the paint is built up so thickly it stands away from the surface, while in others, the artist sanded back the pigment to expose the raw structure of the linen beneath. He was a man of many layers, much like the surfaces he worked upon.

Themes and Legacy

The subject matter of his art often mirrored his life as a scholar and a priest. He dealt with the human condition through a lens that was both earthly and spiritual. His work frequently touched upon the biblical, yet it remained grounded in the flesh and the immediate presence of the body. His expertise in the Old Testament was not merely academic; it informed the way he approached the weight of his subjects. He passed away in Amsterdam in 2004, leaving behind a body of work that spans the spectrum from the deeply religious to the intensely human.
