The Life and Artistic Journey of Augusto Ballerini

Augusto Ballerini was an Argentine painter known for his portraits, historical scenes, and landscapes. He began his artistic training under the portrait painter Francisco Romero. During his youth, he produced drawings of lighthouses, bays, and ports in the region of Maldonado, Uruguay. Following a trip to Rome at age eighteen, where he met Pope Leo XIII, Ballerini traveled to Italy to continue his studies. In Rome, he took private lessons from Cesare Maccari, and later spent time in Florence as part of a group of Argentine artists studying there.

Upon returning to Buenos Aires, he established himself through portraiture and landscape painting done en plein air. In 1892, he joined a scientific expedition to the provinces of Chaco, Formosa, Entre Ríos, Corrientes, and Misiones, as well as Paraguay and Brazil. During this trip, he sketched the Iguazú Falls, producing works that later earned a gold medal at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago.

Notable Works and Contributions

Ballerini’s repertoire includes several significant pieces held in major collections. His painting A Moonlit Night in Venice was among the first works by an Argentine artist purchased for the National Museum of Fine Arts. Other notable works include:

  • Miraculous Origin of Our Lady of Luján in the Year 1630 (National Museum of Fine Arts)
  • The Crossing of the Andes (National Historical Museum), which served as the basis for two Argentine banknotes

Beyond his canvas, Ballerini designed sets for the opera Pampa and provided drawings for La Nación and La Ilustración Argentina. He was a co-creator of La Colmena, an institution for promoting local art, and was an honorary member of the Sociedad Estémulo de Bellas Artes. His final exhibition opened at the Salón Freitas y Castillo in April 1902.
