Aberdeen Art Gallery

Origins and History of the Gallery

The origins of the Aberdeen Art Gallery can be traced back to 1873. During this period, a group of civic-minded businessmen, collectors, and artists began the process of establishing a public space for art in the city. This collective effort led to the formal founding of the institution in 1884. Following these foundational years, the gallery opened its doors to the public on 7 July 1885.

As the main visual arts exhibition space in Aberdeen, Scotland, the gallery has grown from its nineteenth-century beginnings into a significant institution. Its history is marked by the acquisition of diverse collections, including the Alexander Macdonald Bequest in 1900. The institution's continued relevance was recognized in 2020, when it was named one of five winners of the ArtFund Museum of the Year Award.

The Building and its Architecture

The architecture of the Aberdeen Art Gallery follows a neo-classical style, characterized by its formal proportions and structural clarity. Construction of the primary building began in 1883, following a design by Alexander Marshall Mackenzie. The interior is defined by soaring ceilings and the light provided by stained glass windows. In 1905, the site was expanded with the addition of a sculpture court.

The complex extends beyond the main galleries to include several distinct structures. Cowdray Hall serves as the venue for music and performances, while the War Memorial is situated at the western end of the building. This memorial includes both a room inside the gallery and a monument located outside. The site's physical presence is marked by its granite construction, a characteristic of the local landscape.

The Diverse Art Collections

The collection spans 700 years, encompassing a wide range of works by local, national, and international artists, designers, and makers. This breadth includes significant pieces by the Scottish Colourists and the works of Joan Eardley. The fine arts holdings feature Impressionist works by Monet and Renoir, alongside contemporary contributions from Francis Bacon and Tracey Emin. The scope of the collection extends into modern design and sculpture, with works by Barbara Hepworth and the fashion designer Bill Gibb.

The holdings are organized across eighteen collection galleries. These spaces house various media, from traditional paintings to modern sculptural elements. The acquisition of these items has been a continuous process for over 130 years, ensuring the presence of both historical and contemporary perspectives within the institution.

Masterpieces of the Collection

The fine arts collection includes significant works by Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. These pieces are held alongside the works of Francis Bacon and Tracey Emin. The institution also maintains a strong presence of Scottish art, featuring the work of Joan Eardley. These artists represent a broad spectrum of stylistic developments within the gallery's holdings.

The collection is further defined by the presence of works by John Bulloch Souter, Ian Hamilton Finlay, and James McBey. These artists contribute to the specific character of the Aberdeen Art Gallery. The selection of works reflects a commitment to both local and international movements.

Recent Projects and Redevelopment

Between 2015 and 2019, the Aberdeen Art Gallery underwent a landmark redevelopment. This project, which cost £34.6 million, was led by Hoskins Architects. The initiative was supported by Aberdeen City Council and the National Lottery Heritage Fund. Following these extensive works, the gallery re-opened to the public in November 2019.

The architectural expansion introduced a new copper-clad rooftop extension. This addition was designed as a sculptural element to respond to the proportions of the existing frontage. The redevelopment aimed to improve visitor services, increase display areas, and address public circulation and street access. These changes have allowed the institution to accommodate larger international touring exhibitions and provide new learning and event spaces.

Visiting the Gallery

Visitors can view the collection for free. The museum contains 18 collection galleries, each offering a specific perspective on the holdings. A practical starting point for any visit is the Sculpture Court located on the ground floor.

For those who prefer digital engagement, 50 artworks from the collection are available through the Smartify app. This allows for a more detailed examination of specific pieces outside of the physical gallery space.
