Khairullah Rahim: Exploring Marginality Through Material Experimentation and Conceptual Engagement

Khairullah Rahim’s artistic journey began in Singapore, where he absorbed the vibrant tapestry of diverse cultural traditions—a formative experience that instilled within him a lifelong fascination for visual arts. Particularly drawn to drawing, he honed his skills during his undergraduate studies at LASALLE College of the Arts, gaining a foundational understanding of artistic techniques and conceptual frameworks that would underpin his subsequent explorations. This early dedication to craft foreshadowed his commitment to meticulous observation and thoughtful reflection—characteristics that permeate his oeuvre.

Formal Training & Residencies: Expanding Horizons

Recognizing the importance of broadening his artistic perspective beyond Singapore’s borders, Rahim pursued postgraduate studies at Rutgers University, New Jersey, USA, delving into advanced methodologies for visual storytelling. This intellectual pursuit fueled a desire to engage critically with global contexts and informed his decision to actively seek opportunities for artist residencies—experiences that profoundly shaped his artistic vision. He participated in prestigious programs at IASPIS (Stockholm), Goethe-Institut (Singapore), Salzburger Kunstverein (Salzburg), Facebook (Singapore), Hubei Institute of Fine Arts (Hubei), Taipei Artist Village (Taipei), and YOUKOBO Art Residency Programme (Tokyo)—each residency providing invaluable insights into diverse cultural landscapes and artistic practices. These encounters instilled in him a sensitivity to the complexities of representation and encouraged him to challenge conventional assumptions about art’s role in shaping societal understanding.

Material Experimentation & Conceptual Frameworks: Rhinestones as Disruptive Tools

Rahim distinguishes himself through a relentless pursuit of material experimentation—most notably his sustained engagement with synthetic polymers, specifically rhinestones. He doesn't view these shimmering stones merely as decorative embellishments; rather, he employs them as conceptual tools—a deliberate strategy designed to disrupt established visual hierarchies and provoke contemplation. As Rahim eloquently describes, “My works are colourful, but I hope viewers engage with them on a deeper level to probe into what I’m actually using these colours to say.” This conviction stems from his belief that art should transcend simplistic interpretations of reality—challenging audiences to confront uncomfortable truths and embrace nuanced perspectives. The use of rhinestones reflects Rahim's broader intellectual preoccupation with decolonizing botany and questioning colonial epistemologies—a commitment to dismantling entrenched systems of power and representation. He seeks to re-inscribe silenced narratives into public consciousness, fostering a critical yet affective space where marginality is not simply endured but creatively reimagined. These stones complicate conventional ideas around visibility and legibility, mirroring the artist’s ongoing exploration of how artists can engage with complex social issues—particularly those pertaining to queer visibility and marginalization—through innovative visual languages.

Notable Exhibitions & Recognition: A Global Presence

Rahim's artistic endeavors have garnered considerable acclaim and recognition on both national and international stages. His work has been showcased in solo and group presentations at institutions such as the Barbican Centre (London), Tai Kwun Contemporary (Hong Kong), Centre for Contemporary Arts (Glasgow), Tiger Strikes Asteroid (New York), Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (Bangkok), and the National Gallery Singapore—demonstrating a commitment to disseminating his artistic vision to diverse audiences. Key projects include participation in the 6th Singapore Biennale, curated by Patrick Flores; Silent Hands, curated by Rotana Shaker, Zain Al Saie, and Jean Wong at Hayy Jameel (Jeddah); and HIV Science as Art, curated by Daniel Cordner and Jessica Whitbread at Brainlab (Munich).
