The life of a portraitist

Born in Antwerp on July 6, 1821, Joseph Pierre Lambert Delin grew up in a house shaped by the presence of his father, Jacques Joseph Delin, who taught history and school lessons in the same city. His path into the world of paint began at the Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, where he sat under the guidance of Gustave Wappers. The studio was a place of steady practice.

His hands spent much time capturing the faces of those around him. In 1869, his reputation led him to Rome. There, he worked on portraits of Pope Pius IX and several high-ranking figures like Cardinal Giuseppe Berardi and Pierre-Jean Beckx. He returned to Antwerp after this mission, settling into a life deeply connected to the local artistic community.

He helped build the foundations of the Cercle Artistique d'Anvers, an association for artists that met in its own halls. His involvement went beyond the canvas; he held a position as president of the plastic arts section within this group and was a member of the Société royale pour l'encouragement des Beaux-arts à Anvers.

The faces on the canvas

Delin’s work focused heavily on the individual. He looked closely at the features of his subjects, whether they were noblemen or members of the local clergy. His collection of portraits includes specific likenesses such as:

Some of his studies were more about the raw mechanics of expression than a finished likeness. One such piece, an academic study of anger, shows a different side of his technical focus. He also worked on pieces like a bust of a man and woman in sixteenth-century clothing, showing an interest in historical costume.

His self-portraits remain among the works held in the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp. These paintings show the artist looking back at himself, documenting his own presence through the years until his death in Antwerp on December 13, 1892.
