Allegory of the Arts and Sciences

1649 · Oil On Canvas · Museu do Prado, Madrid

This white bust acts as a silent anchor amidst a collection of objects that speak of human thought and the inevitable passage of time. To its side, a skull sits in the gloom, its hollow gaze a quiet reminder of mortality. The scene is a quiet arrangement of textures:…

Conheça Ignacio Raeth

The Quiet Life of a Jesuit Painter

Born in Antwerp around 1626, Ignacio Raeth lived a life defined by the boundaries of his religious calling. He was a member of the Society of Jesus, entering the order in 1644 at the age of eighteen. Before his religious life took precedence, he was already a member of the Guild of Saint Luke in Antwerp, having been admitted in 1641. His hands were trained by Daniel Seghers, another Jesuit brother who taught him the nuances of his craft. This connection placed him within a specific lineage of painters who used their brushes to serve the spiritual needs of their order.

His presence in Spain began when he arrived in the company of Johann Nithard, the confessor to Queen Mariana of Austria. This connection brought him to Madrid, where he lived and worked between 1649 and 1662. He settled in the novitiate of his order, a place that would become the center of his creative output. His work was not for public galleries but for the quiet contemplation of his fellow brothers.

The Brush and the Devotion

Raeth’s work is tied closely to the life of Saint Ignatius of Loyola. In 1662, he completed a series of thirty-six paintings for the Novitiate of Madrid, each one depicting a moment from the life of the founder of the Jesuits. Much of this series was lost to time, scattered or destroyed during the Spanish Civil War. Only fragments remain, such as those found in Santa Cruz del Retamar in Toledo. These surviving pieces show the influence of his Flemish training, particularly in how he handled light and form.

His surviving canvases offer a glimpse into his technical focus:

  • Milagro del globo de fuego sobre la cabeza de san Ignacio mientras celebra la misa, which captures a specific miracle during the celebration of Mass.
  • Alegoría de la Compañía de Jesús con el anagrama, a work that reflects the formal structure of his training.
  • San Ignacio de Loyola atendiendo a un enfermo, showing the saint in a moment of service to the sick.

Beyond large canvases, he contributed to the visual language of the era through smaller works, such as a drawing for an engraving in the book Primer instituto de la Sagrada Religión de la Cartuxa, published in 1663. This work depicted a garden staircase used by Carthusian monks. His life ended in 1666, leaving behind a body of work that remains largely tied to the religious institutions he served.
