Avercamp's work enjoyed great popularity and he sold his drawings, many of which were tinted with water-color, as finished pictures to be pasted into the albums of collectors (an outstanding collection is at Windsor Castle). Avercamp was born in Amsterdam, where he studied with Pieter Isaacsz (1569–1625), but to 23 years old (1608) he moved from Amsterdam to Kampen in the province of Overijssel. He was deaf and dumb and known as “de Stomme van Kampen” (the mute of Kampen). Avercamp’s father was appointed town apothecary. After his death, his business was taken over by his wife, Beatrix Peters, and by one of their other sons, either Lambert or Pieter. Another son became a physician, and the members of this well-educated family were for many years prominent citizens of Kampen. Avercamp’s nephew and pupil Barent Avercamp (1612-79) carried on his style in an accomplished manner. He died in Kampen and was interred there in the Sint Nicolaaskerk.
