The Artistic Evolution of Luis Feito
Luis Feito began his formal training at the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid. While his early work was characterized by a figurative style, his discovery of Cubism led him toward a nonfigurative approach, resulting in his first solo show of abstract works in 1954. After traveling to Paris on a grant from the French government, he resided there for nearly 25 years. During this period, he became acquainted with several Art Informel artists and was introduced to automatism, which led him to incorporate materials such as sand into his paintings.
As a founding member of the Madrid-based group El Paso , Feito contributed to an art movement that emphasized an antiacademic and innovative style. His work from the late 1950s and early 1960s often utilized a subdued palette of blacks, grays, whites, and ochers, later introducing red as a primary color. His technique frequently involved the overlapping of smooth and encrusted surfaces through the use of heavy impasto and sand.
