A life between two shores

Edmond Dyonnet began his days in Crest, France, born into a family whose name changed through a clerical error during the French Revolution. His early years were marked by movement, following his father to Turin, Italy, where he spent much of his childhood. This period in Italy left its mark on his eyes; it was here that he first encountered the logic of perspective and the weight of proportion. In 1875, the family moved to Canada, settling in Montreal. The landscape changed from the familiar streets of Europe to the growing bustle of Quebec, yet Dyonnet carried the lessons of the Accademia Albertina and the studios of Naples with him.

His training was rigorous and far-reaching. He studied under Andrea Gastaldi and Pier Celestino Gilardi in Turin, later moving through the art centers of Naples and Rome. These travels allowed him to sit before the works of the great masters, absorbing the techniques of oil painting and the precision of anatomy. While he would eventually paint the Canadian landscape, his heart often remained with the human figure. He preferred the structured reality of a portrait over the loose, changing light of the Impressionists, a choice that shaped his entire approach to the canvas.

The discipline of the brush

In Montreal, Dyonnet became a fixture of the local art community, though he was known for a certain stubbornness regarding technique. He had little patience for the blurred edges of Van Gogh or the fleeting impressions of the era, preferring instead the clarity found in French and Dutch classics like Poussin. To him, art required a disciplined hand. He often told his students to rub out mistakes and start again, insisting on a foundation of careful observation and anatomical accuracy. His studio was a place of work, not just inspiration.

His professional life was defined by roles that demanded order and administration. As the secretary of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts for decades, he helped organize the very structure of the Canadian art scene. He was also a founder of the École des beaux-arts de Montréal, working alongside Alfred Laliberté and Marc-Aurèle de Foy Suzor-Coté to establish a formal place for art education in the city. His influence was felt through the hands of those he taught, including A.Y. Jackson and Clarence Gagnon, who learned his methods of drawing and perspective.

A visual record of a community

Beyond the oil on canvas, Dyonnet used the camera to document the faces of his time. His photographs from 1891 to 1915 capture the members of Montreal’s Pen and Pencil Club, providing a quiet look at the architects, writers, and artists who moved through the city. These images, much like his portraits, focus on the individual. He also found himself the preferred portraitist for the Montreal bourgeoisie, painting judges, doctors, and community leaders who sought his steady, academic hand.

His later years were spent in the same city where he had built his reputation. Even as a nonagenarian, he remained active, eventually writing his memoirs. He left behind a body of work held in major collections, from the National Gallery of Canada to the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec. His legacy is found not only in his paintings of landscapes and people but in the institutional foundations he helped lay for generations of Canadian artists.
