His father, John Fraser of Portsoy, Scotland, was a tailor and an ardent supporter of the Chartist movement—a social reform movement advocating for universal suffrage—reflecting a progressive spirit that would permeate his artistic endeavors. Fraser's maternal grandparents had emigrated to Stanstead in Lower Canada (Quebec) as pioneers in 1831, exposing him to the burgeoning landscape traditions of North America and fostering an early fascination with capturing natural vistas.
