The Life and Activism of Lajos Kassák
Born in Nové Zámky, Slovakia, Lajos Kassák was a multifaceted figure whose life was defined by a transition from manual labor to intense intellectual and artistic engagement. After working as a locksmith's apprentice and a factory worker in Budapest, he became a prominent political activist and writer. His journey included a period of exile in Vienna following political tensions in Hungary. Throughout his career, he served as a poet, novelist, painter, essayist, editor, and journalist. He was deeply involved in the socialist movement and the avant-garde, editing several influential journals such as A Tett, MA, Dokumentum, and Munka. His artistic practice was deeply intertwined with his role as a theoretician, particularly regarding constructivism and the concept of "image architecture." Origins and History of the Gallery
The Ernest Zmeták Art Gallery was founded on January 1, 1979. Its establishment was driven by the initiative of the artist Ernest Zmeták. The institution began its operations with its first administrative and exhibition headquarters located at the Prednádražie Services House in Érsekújvár, near the bus station.
The gallery underwent several transitions in its early decades. Following its initial period in Érsekújvár, the institution occupied the rear wing of the City National Committee building. In 2003, the gallery moved to its current building on Björnsonova Street in Nové Zámky, Slovakia. The exhibition halls at this permanent location opened to the public in January 2004.
Major Collections and Permanent Exhibitions
The permanent exhibition, titled "European Art from the 16th to the 20th Century," forms the core of the gallery's holdings. This collection was made possible through the donations of Ernest Zmeták and Danica Zmetáková. The works represent several centuries of European artistic development, providing a chronological perspective on the evolution of visual language across the continent.
A significant portion of the gallery is dedicated to the Lajos Kassák Memorial Room. Established in 1986, this space was created following a gift from Klára Kassák. The room focuses on the contributions of the Hungarian avant-garde artist, offering a dedicated space for his specific aesthetic influence. In addition to these permanent displays, the gallery presents works from the Zmeták-házaspár collection, which further expands the breadth of the institution's holdings.
