View of the back of the escutcheon, showing the repoussé techinique. This iron coat of arms consists of a convex oval framed by scrolls, topped with a large crown, and flanked by two winged cherubs holding a wreath, and two faces in side profile. Vegetable and leaf forms decorate the lower corners.Colnik created this elaborate work during his time as a student at the Industrial Art School of Munich. One of only a few works signed by the artist (see lower-right corner), the escutcheon is executed in a technique called repoussé, in which a sheet of metal is hammered out from the back to create a bas-relief design.Photography by Kevin Miyazaki.
