Natalie Baxter: Sculpting Identity and Challenging Conventions

Natalie Baxter (b. 1985, Lexington, KY) is an artist currently residing in Brooklyn, NY. Her artistic journey began with a profound fascination for textiles and quilting traditions passed down through generations—a connection that fundamentally shaped her approach to crafting narratives within sculptural forms. This heritage instilled in her a deep understanding of craft as a means of preserving cultural memory and communicating complex ideas. Baxter pursued her undergraduate studies at the University of the South in Sewanee, TN, earning a BA in Fine Art in 2007. During this formative period, she immersed herself in artistic exploration, honing her skills in various mediums and developing an early appreciation for conceptual art alongside traditional techniques. Her MFA program at the University of Kentucky solidified her focus on sculptural experimentation—pushing boundaries between established craft traditions and innovative artistic concepts. She meticulously manipulated materials, often incorporating repurposed fabrics and found objects, to create evocative pieces that conveyed emotional resonance and intellectual depth. Baxter’s vision was rooted in a conviction that sculpture could serve as a powerful tool for confronting uncomfortable truths and fostering empathy across cultural divides. Baxter's dedication to artistic excellence extended beyond her formal education; she actively participated in artist residencies—such as the Wassaic Project, Stove Works, Vermont Studio Center, Konstepidemin in Gothenburg, Sweden, and Queens Art Fund Grant—allowing her to collaborate with fellow artists and broaden her creative horizons. These experiences nurtured her ability to engage critically with contemporary art discourse and fueled her ongoing exploration of artistic expression. Her work has garnered critical acclaim internationally, showcasing her commitment to challenging conventions and sparking dialogue about pressing societal issues. Notable exhibitions include installations at Denny Dimin Gallery (New York, NY and Hong Kong), The New York Historical Society (New York, NY), Supermarket Fair (Stockholm, SE), SPRING/BREAK Art Show (NewYork, NY), Material Art Fair (Mexico City, MX), and Institute 193 (Lexington, KY). These venues provided platforms for her artistic explorations to reach diverse audiences and stimulate conversations about art’s role in shaping cultural understanding. Baxter's sculptures often grapple with themes of identity—particularly the intersection between personal experience and broader cultural contexts—and confront stereotypes related to gender roles. Her artistic practice is driven by a desire to provoke contemplation about complex questions surrounding representation and cultural heritage. Baxter’s commitment to fostering creative engagement extends beyond her studio practice; she actively participates in artist residencies—such as the Wassaic Project, Stove Works, Vermont Studio Center, Konstepidemin in Gothenburg, Sweden, and Queens Art Fund Grant—allowing her to collaborate with fellow artists and expand her artistic horizons.
