Alessandro Milesis historie

The Venetian Canvas

Venice, 1856. A child is born into the heart of a city defined by water and light. Alessandro Milesi begins his formal training at the Venice Academy of Fine Arts, entering the studio of Napoleone Nani in 1869. The years between 1869 and 1874 are marked by rigorous study under Nani, a period that eventually leads him away from his birthplace to follow his master to Verona. This movement through the Italian landscape shapes his early vision.

In 1876, the path leads back to Venice. The city becomes more than a setting; it becomes the primary subject of his brush. He does not seek the grand historical narratives of the past but focuses instead on the pulse of everyday Venetian life. His work carries the weight of the tradition established by Giacomo Favretto, yet he integrates the fresh perspectives offered by Ettore Tito and Cesare Laurenti.

A Life in Exhibition

The late nineteenth century brings recognition through the national stages of Milan and Venice. In 1881, his presence is felt at the Milan exhibitions, followed by a significant showing in Venice in 1887. The reach of his talent extends far beyond the Adriatic coast. At the Boston International Exhibition of 1890, he receives a gold medal, an achievement that signals his arrival on the international stage.

His career is defined by a long-standing relationship with the Venice Biennale. From 1895 to 1935, Milesi participates in every single edition of this prestigious event. The milestones of his later years include:

  • A solo exhibition at the Venice Biennale in 1912.
  • An anthological exhibition at the Venice Biennale in 1935.
  • Participation in the Milan Triennale.

Portraits and People

As the new century unfolds, Milesi shifts his focus toward the faces of a changing society. He captures the Venetian middle classes with a precision that documents the era. His subjects are not mere figures in a landscape but individuals with specific roles in the city's social fabric. He turns his attention to:

  • Writers
  • Musicians
  • Actors

These portraits provide a window into the cultural life of Venice during his lifetime. Through these depictions, he maintains a connection to the human element of the city, even as the decades pass toward 1945.
