Born in Fessenbach—now part of Off and raised in Mannheim—he descended from a family steeped in military tradition. A fiercely independent man, he famously turned down offers of professorships in both Karlsruhe and Strasbourg, choosing instead to prioritize the purity of his craft above all else.
