In 1887, he produced Carnival at St Marks Square in Venice by night , a piece that sought to translate the atmosphere of the Italian square onto canvas. His ability to move between different mediums allowed him to approach subjects like the ruins of Corinth or religious themes with varying degrees of texture and light.
His technical repertoire included:
Oil on canvas , used in works such as Die Tempelruine von Korinth (1885–1885).Lithography and graphic design , which required a different precision of line.Stage design, bringing his visual sensibilities to the theatrical space.
A Versatile Hand
The breadth of Hoffmann's output suggests a creator who found purpose in many forms of visual communication. Whether working on a large-scale oil painting or a smaller piece like The Madonna and Child adored by Angels , he maintained a commitment to his craft. His signatures, often simple initials like HJ , appear alongside dates such as 94, marking his continued activity into the final decade of his life.
