The Life and Artistic Evolution of Giovanni Carnovali
Known as Il Piccio, Giovanni Carnovali was an Italian painter born in Montegrino Valtravaglia. His artistic training began at the Carrara Academy in Bergamo under Giuseppe Diotti, who recognized his talent early on. After traveling to Rome and Parma, Carnovali established a studio in Cremona before transferring his practice to Milan. His work is characterized by a departure from strict Neoclassicism, moving instead toward an expressive interpretation of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. He was known for a solitary and retiring character, often maintaining a lifestyle and artistic approach that stood in contrast to the academic rigor of his contemporaries.

His stylistic evolution is evident in works such as Moses Rescued from the Waters, which features a dream-like combination of landscape and figures, and The Bather, which reflects a treatment of the figure that parallels Realism. His influence extended to the next generation of Milanese artists, including his pupil Tranquillo Cremona.
