    Károly Markó the Elder, also known by the Italian name Carlo Marco, stands as a foundational figure in the history of Hungarian landscape painting. In his early years, Markó pursued an apprenticeship in engineering within Pest and Kolozsvár, today known as Cluj-Napoca, Romania. After working as an engineer in Ólubló and Rozsnyó, he turned his focus toward the canvas, eventually enrolling at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna to major in history and landscape painting.
