    Apie šį kūrinį

A Cloak as a Dagger — avi sooful

A sculpture titled, A cloak as a dagger in wood and barbed wire by the South African artist, Avitha Sooful (b. 1964). Formed from the trunk of a Silver Oak tree and then held with rusted barbed wire, the artist has engraved extracts from the Natives Resettlement Act No 19, 1954. This formed part of the apartheid system of racial segregation in South Africa. It permitted the removal of blacks from any area within and next to the magisterial district of Johannesburg by the South African government. A cloak as a dagger also reflects on interpreting social issues and their impact on individuals. A cloak as a dagger reflects on land claims and laws which govern land ownership. Within this context, issues of land remain contested and violent legacies of both apartheid and our South African democracy. Short Biography: Avitha Sooful was born in 1964 in Durban, Kwazulu Natal, South Africa. She studied at the former University of Durban-Westville (today the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal) where she obtained her undergraduate and Master

AVI SOOFUL: A Voice Carved from Landscape and Memory

Avitha Sooful’s artistic journey is inextricably linked to the tumultuous history of South Africa, a nation grappling with the legacies of apartheid while striving towards a more equitable future. Born in Durban, Kwazulu Natal, in 1964, her early life was profoundly shaped by the pervasive injustices of racial segregation and the struggle for liberation. This formative experience isn’t merely reflected in her work; it actively informs her artistic process, driving her to confront difficult truths and explore complex themes of identity, displacement, and social justice. Sooful's career blossomed during a period of intense political and cultural transformation, a time when the University of Durban-Westville (UDW) became a crucible for student activism and resistance – an environment that profoundly influenced her artistic development.

Her formal education at UDW provided a crucial foundation. Sooful’s studies in Fine Arts were not simply academic pursuits; they were deeply intertwined with the broader political landscape of the time. The university itself was a site of conflict, witnessing numerous student protests and police interventions. This lived experience instilled within her a critical awareness of power dynamics and social inequalities – themes that would become central to her artistic explorations. She graduated with both undergraduate and Master’s degrees from UDW, marking the beginning of a career dedicated to using art as a tool for dialogue and social commentary.

The Language of Landscape: Symbolism and Social Critique

Sooful's work is particularly notable for its skillful deployment of landscape as a vehicle for conveying complex socio-political narratives. Rather than presenting idyllic representations of nature, her paintings often depict landscapes imbued with layers of symbolic meaning. Her series Through the Free State, for example, initially appears to be a simple autumnal scene – a field turning brown under a blue sky. However, the deliberate use of Afrikaans in the title immediately signals a deeper resonance. The Free State province held particular significance during apartheid, serving as a stronghold of Afrikaner nationalism and a region where Indians were systematically excluded from residence and movement.

This exclusion is powerfully visualized through the juxtaposition of the seemingly peaceful landscape with the stark imagery of barbed wire – a potent symbol of confinement and oppression. The use of woodcut techniques further amplifies this sense of constraint, creating sharp, angular lines that mirror the harsh realities of apartheid. Similarly, her work Children Should be Seen And Heard powerfully confronts issues of child abuse, using simple crayon drawings alongside stark black and white prints to evoke a disturbing contrast between innocence and vulnerability. The inclusion of handwritten notes from children highlights their voices – silenced by systemic injustice but demanding to be heard.

    Influences and Artistic Evolution

Sooful’s artistic development has been shaped by a diverse range of influences, both local and international. Her early work was deeply rooted in the anti-apartheid movement, reflecting the urgent need for social change and resistance. However, her practice has evolved over time, incorporating elements of postcolonial theory, critical geography, and feminist perspectives. The influence of artists like Nelson Mandela and Miriam Makeba is evident in her commitment to representing marginalized voices and challenging dominant narratives.

Furthermore, Sooful’s engagement with the art world extends beyond her studio practice. She has held numerous leadership positions within South African arts organizations, including President of the South African National Association for the Visual Arts (SANAVA). This active participation in the broader artistic community reflects her dedication to fostering dialogue and promoting access to the arts for all.

    Legacy and Continuing Relevance

Avitha Sooful’s work remains profoundly relevant today, continuing to provoke critical reflection on issues of social justice, inequality, and historical memory. Her art serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggle for human rights and the importance of confronting uncomfortable truths. Her ability to translate complex socio-political realities into evocative visual narratives has solidified her position as one of South Africa’s most significant contemporary artists. Sooful's legacy lies not only in her individual creations but also in her commitment to using art as a catalyst for social change, ensuring that the voices of the marginalized are heard and remembered.

A Tapestry of Pretoria’s Heritage: The University of Pretoria Museums

Nestled within the vibrant, purple-hued embrace of the Jacaranda City, the University of Pretoria Museums stand as a profound testament to South Africa's intellectual and artistic soul. More than mere repositories for silent artifacts, these institutions function as living chronicles, weaving together a complex narrative of a nation’s journey through time. To step into these halls is to embark on an immersive voyage where academic rigor meets the evocative power of storytelling, illuminating a multifaceted past that ranges from ancient indigenous traditions to the transformative echoes of the liberation struggle. The museum serves as a vital bridge between the preservation of heritage and the pulse of contemporary artistic appreciation, offering a sanctuary for those who seek to understand the deep-seated cultural currents that shape South African identity.

The architectural landscape of the campus itself provides a majestic stage for this collection, dominated by the venerable Old Arts Building and the Merensky Building. The Old Arts Building is a true architectural marvel, a landmark that breathes with the elegance of various eras, from the sweeping grandeur of Victorian design to the streamlined sophistication of Art Deco. Within its soaring ceilings and ornate structural details, one finds a curated dialogue between European influences and African aesthetics. This sense of structural innovation extends into the museum's unique holdings, most notably through the remarkable assemblage featuring works by Jean Prouvé. The visionary French architect’s influence brings a touch of modern functionalism to the collection, where his philosophy of prioritizing aesthetic beauty alongside structural engineering resonates powerfully against the backdrop of historical South African narratives.

The true heart of the museum lies in its ability to curate moments of profound historical significance through diverse visual media. Collectors and art enthusiasts will find themselves captivated by the meticulous archives that offer unparalleled access to the figures and pivotal movements that have defined the country. A singular highlight that commands reverence is the Golden Rhinoceros of Mapungubwe, a medieval masterpiece of wood overlaid with thin sheets of gold. This delicate yet powerful artifact, discovered by archaeologists from the university, serves as a shimmering symbol of the ancient Kingdom of Mapungubwe and the sophisticated artistry of pre-colonial South Africa. Such treasures are complemented by recent exhibitions that have brought groundbreaking international perspectives to the local context, fostering a global dialogue through collaborations with world-class curators.

What distinguishes the University of Pretoria Museums is their holistic commitment to the lifecycle of art and history. It is not merely a place for observation, but a center for active scholarly research where advanced analytical techniques are employed to reconstruct lost artistic traditions. For the interior designer or the passionate art lover, the museum offers an endless wellspring of inspiration, blending the textures of historical struggle with the elegance of architectural innovation. By integrating educational programs and postgraduate studies into its very framework, the institution ensures that the stories held within its walls continue to evolve, inspiring new generations of creators to find beauty in the enduring power of heritage.
