While much of his early life remains shrouded in mystery, his identity was forged through direct experience with the ocean. Before he became a celebrated painter, he lived the life of a seaman, serving as an ordinary seaman on the East Indiaman Perseverance during a voyage to Bombay and
China between 1812 and 1814.
