A Life of Shadows and Light

Leonid Ivanovich Solomatkin lived a life that mirrored the grit and hardship found within his own canvases. Born in 1837 to a family of poor peasants in Sudzha, he faced the loss of his parents at a very young age. Before he ever held a professional brush, he knew the heavy labor of the earth and the road. He spent his early years working as a shepherd boy and later as an icon seller. There was a time when he traveled from village to village as a chumak, a carter moving through the Russian landscape. During these long stretches on the road, he carried a bundle of sketches, capturing the faces of the people he met along the way—beggars, street acrobats, and organ-grinders.

This wandering period shaped his eye for the human condition. He did not look at the world from a distance; he lived among its most overlooked members. Eventually, these sketches led him to Moscow, where his talent caught the attention of those who could guide him toward formal training. He entered the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture between 1855 and 1860, studying under Apollon Mokritsky. Later, he moved to Saint Petersburg to serve as a volunteer apprentice at the Imperial Academy of Arts.

The Art of the Ordinary

Solomatkin’s work was rooted in the Realistic style, finding its strength in the quiet, often difficult lives of the lower classes. He drew deep inspiration from the Dutch seventeenth-century masters he studied at the Hermitage, as well as the works of Pavel Fedotov. His subject matter rarely sought the grand or the heroic. Instead, he focused on the world of traveling actors, the atmosphere of a tavern, and the daily struggles of ordinary people. His paintings often captured specific, unvarnished moments:

  • The quiet tension of a night scene near a tavern.
  • The simple presence of a street vendor or a peddler.
  • The heavy atmosphere of scenes like In the Wine Cellar or By the Tavern.
  • The movement and life found in works such as Maslenitsa or The Card Game.

He had a habit of making several copies of his paintings, often in small formats. This allowed him to share his vision more easily, even as his personal circumstances grew more difficult. While he achieved some recognition, including silver medals in 1864 and the title of Artist, Third-Degree in 1866, he chose to leave the Academy behind.

A Difficult End

The later years of Solomatkin's life were marked by a struggle that many of his subjects would have recognized. He faced the harsh realities of poverty and homelessness, and he struggled with alcoholism. The same raw honesty that allowed him to paint the lives of the poor eventually became part of his own story. He did not hold formal exhibitions after leaving the Academy, and as time passed, much of his work faded from the public eye.

He passed away in 1883 in a hospital for the poor in Saint Petersburg. He was forty-six years old. Though he died of consumption, the sketches and paintings he left behind remain as a record of a man who truly saw the people of his time, capturing their dignity amidst their hardships.
