Early Life and Artistic Formation

Born in Boulogne-sur-Seine, France, Jean Souverbie was raised in a wealthy family; his father was an engineer for decorative arts. Due to a fragile constitution and frequent illness, he was homeschooled by his father and older sisters before receiving private tutoring. His talent for drawing emerged early, encouraged by his father who gifted him oil paints, an easel, a palette, and canvases when he was approximately ten years old.

The discovery of the vibrant colors and light of the Mediterranean during winters in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, as well as the classical harmony found in the gardens and halls of the Palace of Versailles, left a lasting impression on his development. After moving to Paris, he studied at the Académie Julian under Jean-Paul Laurens. Later, at the Académie Ranson, he became acquainted with the Nabis, including Maurice Denis, Paul Sérusier, Édouard Vuillard, Félix Vallotton, and Pierre Bonnard, whose lessons regarding the liberation of form and color influenced his style.

Evolution of Style and Career

Souverbie's artistic journey saw significant shifts in technique and subject matter. In the 1920s, he turned toward Cubism following the discovery of Georges Braques' works. A pivotal moment occurred in 1925 when he exhibited with the Section d’Or, meeting artists such as Charles Gleizes, André Lhote, and Pablo Picasso. This period saw his depictions of the human figure become increasingly geometric, with sculptural bodies reminiscent of Picasso's cubist icons.

In the 1930s, he moved toward monumental works, leading to commissions for the decoration of the Palais de Chaillot for the World's Fair. During the late 1940s, he contributed to the decoration of ocean liners such as the Ile-de-France, the Liberté, and the Laos. He was elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1946 and served as a professor at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris for over 17 years, where he taught students including Jean Le Merdy.
