Dame Christabel Pankhurst

1909 · Oil On Canvas · National Portrait Gallery, 런던

A sash, striped in purple, white, and green, cuts a sharp diagonal across her torso, marking her affiliation with the suffrage movement. The lighting is dramatic, employing a chiaroscuro effect that…

Ethel Wright 알아보기

The London beginnings

Caroline Elizabeth Wright, known to many as Ethel, began her time with art by walking through the National Gallery, copying the works of others. Her early training took place in the studio of John Seymour Lucas before she moved to Paris. There, at the Académie Julian, she studied under Rodolphe Julian. It was during these years that she developed a steady hand for portraiture and illustration.

Her life in London was marked by shifts in name and circumstance. She married Bernard Armiger Barczinsky in Liverpool in 1897, briefly exhibiting as Mrs. Armiger Barclay. After her marriage ended, she returned to the identity of Ethel Wright. In 1901, she traveled to the United States, where she found work as an illustrator for a few years before returning to England in 1905.

Portraits and Pierrot

The studio often held subjects that ranged from the theatrical to the political. She had a particular interest in painting Pierrot and Pierrettes, works like Bonjour Pierrot! which appeared in various publications. Her canvases also captured society figures, such as Lady Ada Osborne and Beatrice, Lady Lever. Some of her work focused on allegorical images of women, often blending a sense of character with careful detail.

Her brushwork documented the faces of her era, including notable portraits like:

  • Christabel Pankhurst, a portrait of the suffragette leader.
  • The Music Room, featuring Una Dugdale in jade clothing.
  • Pierrot, which was acquired by the Oldham Art Gallery.
  • Portrait of an Unknown Woman.

A life of service and politics

Beyond the easel, her life was shaped by the movements of her time. She became a supporter of the suffragettes and remained active in the Chelsea branch of the WSPU until 1927. Her paintings often reflected this growing political awareness, most notably in her portrait of Christabel Pankhurst. This work eventually found its place in the National Portrait Gallery.

During the First World War, she took on the role of a volunteer nurse at the Royal Free Hospital. This period of service left a lasting mark on her history. She died in London in 1939, leaving behind a body of work held in collections such as Tate Britain and the Atkinson Art Gallery.
