Born near Syracuse, New York, Chester Hicks Loomis possessed a restless spirit that would eventually lead him far from the American landscape. His early training began under Harry Ives Thompson in West Haven, Connecticut, but the pull of the Old World proved too strong to resist. In 1874, he set sail for France, a move that would define the trajectory of his creative life. For eleven years, he immersed himself in the artistic currents of Europe, studying at the Julian Academy and under the guidance of Leon Bonnat. This period of intense study allowed him to absorb the nuances of light and form that would later characterize his various pursuits.
His time in France was marked by significant professional milestones, including exhibitions at six Paris Salons. He moved through the cultural centers of Europe, finding inspiration in the light of Italy and the rugged beauty of Capri. Even as he traveled, his life remained anchored by personal connections, such as his marriage to Sarah Sophia Dana in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1883. This movement between the established academies of Europe and the expanding frontiers of America gave his work a unique perspective, blending formal European training with a keen eye for diverse subject matter.

Loomis was a man of many mediums, never content to limit his expression to a single technique. These experiences provided a wealth of imagery, from the skinning of an antelope to the quietude of a landscape. His work eventually found its way into significant collections, including the Indianapolis Museum of Art, ensuring that his vision remained part of the historical record long after his death in Englewood, New Jersey.
