    Landscape with Tree — Rudolf Bartels

    Rudolf Bartels zählt zu den bedeutendsten Malern Mecklenburgs. Er arbeitete zurückgezogen und von den europäischen Kunstzentren unbeachtet in Schwaan. Seit etwa 1860 hatten Künstler wie Otto Dörr (1831 – 1868), Eduard Ehrke (1837 – 1911) und Carl Malchin (1838 – 1923) die Landschaft um Schwaan als Motiv entdeckt. Durch Franz Bunke (1857 – 1939) entwickelte sich der Ort zur wirklichen Künstlerkolonie. Ab 1892 hielt sich der in Schwaan geborene Künstler vom Frühjahr bis zum Herbst in der Künstlerkolonie auf und brachte zahlreiche seiner Weimarer Schüler und Kollegen mit. Rudolf Bartels erhielt hier von Bunke seine erste Ausbildung, bevor er in Weimar studierte. Bartels Begeisterung für die Weite der mecklenburgischen Flusslandschaft drückt sich in seinen zahlreichen Landschaftsbildern und Darstellungen dörflicher Szenen aus.
