    drennaLUNA — drennaluna

Designer Arlene L. Martin of drennaLUNA from Jamaica exchanged with artisans MayaBags from Belize to create a bespoke look for The Commonwealth Fashion Exchange - an initiative for established and emerging fashion talent from across the Commonwealth’s 53 countries to showcase the power and potential of artisan fashion skills to deliver new networks, trade links and highlight sustainability. The skirt portion of this dress is made of individually cut flowers featuring six petals, folded together in three stages and attached to the core fabric of the garment. Fabric for the jacket and bodice has been created from the selvedge offcuts of the fabric that was used for these flowers, by sewing rows of selvedge together for a subtly manipulated textile. The look is completed with a hand-made bag from MayaBags, an artisanal company in Belize working to preserve and enhance traditional Maya handwork skills. The “uh tok” or in English “Moon Spark” basket purse is made from a coiled and stitched basket frame woven of plant fiber (Jippi Jappa), covered with a Maya hand-woven fabric, lined with Dupion silk, and fastened with a coconut button and macramé loop closure. The look was displayed at Buckingham Palace and the Australian High Commission, London. Both exhibitions were curated by VOGUE

DrennaLuna: A Jamaican Visionary Shaping Caribbean Fashion

Jamaican designer Arlene L. Martin’s journey into the world of fashion began as a passionate hobby—a love for crafting beautiful garments and experimenting with innovative designs. From humble beginnings, fueled by self-taught skills honed during her teenage years, she steadily cultivated her talent and transformed it into a celebrated brand: drennaLUNA. This label isn't merely about clothing; it’s an embodiment of Martin’s artistic vision—a dedication to capturing the essence of Jamaican culture and translating it into elegant silhouettes that resonate with contemporary women.

Early Influences: Martin’s formative years were marked by a fascination with textiles and sewing, nurtured during her time at Heart Academy in Jamaica. These early explorations instilled within her a foundational understanding of garment construction and sparked an enduring passion for creative expression.

Formal Education & Recognition: Recognizing the importance of honing her craft further, Martin pursued formal education at Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts, specializing in fashion design. Her academic pursuits solidified her technical skills while simultaneously exposing her to broader artistic concepts. Notably, she earned accolades for her designs during CFW 2010

Caribbean Fashion Week Debut: In 2009, Martin bravely ventured into the competitive landscape of Caribbean Fashion Week (CFW), presenting her inaugural collection—the New Moon Collection—inspired by the tranquil beauty of Negril. This debut garnered significant attention and validated her belief in the market’s receptiveness to her designs.

The Evolution of drennaLUNA: From Hobby to Brand Identity

Following CFW 2009, Martin embraced the momentum generated by her success, establishing drennaLUNA as a distinct fashion label. Driven by feedback from discerning clients and fueled by an unwavering commitment to quality craftsmanship, she embarked on a path of continuous innovation—expanding her repertoire beyond bridal collections to encompass a broader spectrum of apparel designs. Her brand’s ethos centers around simplicity, elegance, and a celebration of Jamaican heritage.

Collaborations & Partnerships: drennaLUNA has forged fruitful alliances with influential figures in the fashion industry, including Cynthia Bailey—a supermodel who graced CFW 2011—and JAMPRO (Jamaica Promotions Corporation), where Martin served as National Consultant developing Jamaica’s Export Strategy.

International Showcase: Demonstrating her artistic prowess on a global stage, drennaLUNA has captivated audiences at London Fashion Week twice and New York Fashion Week once, showcasing its collections in prominent locations—Berlin Germany.

    Design Philosophy & Artistic Vision

Martin’s design aesthetic is characterized by fluid draping techniques—a deliberate homage to the natural rhythms of Jamaican landscapes—and a masterful use of vibrant colors that capture the vibrancy of Caribbean culture. Her collections are infused with inspiration drawn from diverse sources, ranging from African safari experiences to the serene beauty of Negril beaches. She strives to create garments that empower women while honoring tradition and embracing innovation.

Signature Style: drennaLUNA’s signature style embodies a harmonious blend of sophistication and comfort—reflecting Martin's belief in dressing with grace and confidence.

Commitment to Craftsmanship: Each garment is meticulously crafted by hand, upholding the highest standards of quality and attention to detail—a testament to Martin’s unwavering dedication to her craft.

    Recognition & Legacy

Throughout her career, drennaLUNA has garnered numerous awards and accolades—acknowledging Martin's exceptional talent and contribution to Caribbean fashion. Her brand has been featured in prestigious publications like Essence Magazine—solidifying its position as a beacon of creativity and cultural pride. Commonwealth Fashion Council

A Tapestry of Cultures and Conscience

Nestled within the vibrant, rhythmic heart of London, the Commonwealth Fashion Council stands as far more than a mere repository for objects; it is an audacious reimagining of how art communicates, inspires, and incites global action. It embodies a profound vision where aesthetic appreciation is inextricably linked to social responsibility. Here, the museum serves as a living bridge between fifty-six nations, weaving together a tapestry of cultures that celebrates both the grandeur of historical artistry and the urgent necessity of ethical innovation. To step inside is to enter a space where the boundaries between fashion, textile heritage, and fine art dissolve into a singular, powerful narrative of human connection.

The Artistry of Thread and Canvas

The collection at the CFC is a breathtaking study in contrasts, ranging from the intimate precision of hand-woven textiles to the monumental scale of British Impressionism. One cannot help but be moved by the meticulous depictions of craftsmanship, such as “Afroditi Hera sewing her dress for The Commonwealth Fashion Exchange,” a piece that captures the very essence of collaborative design and the preservation of ancestral techniques. This reverence for the handmade is balanced by works of profound psychological depth and historical weight. Visitors may find themselves lost in the sweeping, light-filled canvases of Sidney James Barton or confronted by the raw, existential tension found in retrospectives of Francis Bacon’s ‘Head-VI’. This juxtaposition—the delicate thread meeting the distorted, screaming figure—creates a dialogue that explores the full spectrum of the human condition, from the serenity of creation to the trauma of existence.

    Architectural Harmony and Ethical Light

The physical environment of the Council is a deliberate extension of its ethos. Designed with an emphasis on transparency and accessibility, the building utilizes natural light and expansive, open spaces to foster a sense of communal contemplation. The architecture does not merely house art; it invites it to breathe. For the interior designer or the searching collector, the CFC offers a masterclass in how space can mirror values. Every corner of the museum reflects the Planet People Hope strategy, prioritizing environmental preservation and social equity. Through multimedia presentations that illuminate the creative processes behind each garment and workshops that offer hands-on engagement with ancient techniques, the Council ensures that art remains a tactile, living experience. It is a sanctuary for those who seek beauty that does not come at the cost of the planet, making it an essential destination for anyone invested in the future of sustainable luxury and cultural preservation.
