The Metropolitan Museum of Art acquired her 1936 painting Catastrophe, cementing her place within the canon of American art. Throughout the 1930s and 40s, she created numerous lithographs for Associated American Artists and contributed illustrations to Life magazine, documenting her travels through North Africa, Mexico, and Cuba. Though her focus on figuration fell out of favor with the rise of Abstract Expressionism in the post-war era, interest in Lee’s work has experienced a resurgence in recent years.
