Born in Nottingham in 1860, Redgate was a child of both light and shadow, the son of Sylvanus Redgate, a skilled photographer and portrait painter. This lineage proved foundational to his artistic identity; from his father’s photographic practice, he inherited a profound respect for visual precision and the subtle nuances of light, while his likely studies at the Nottingham School of Art provided the technical scaffolding for his burgeoning talent.
