Early Life, Family and Training
Alexander Johann Dallinger von Dalling was born in Vienna on 1 August 1783. His entry into the art world was not a matter of chance but a direct consequence of his lineage. He was the son of Johann Dallinger von Dalling, the elder, a man who had already established a presence in the Austrian Empire. This familial connection ensured that Alexander Johann Dallinger von Dalling was immersed in the technical demands of the craft from his earliest years.
Training was a domestic affair. He studied under his father, absorbing the specific methods of a professional workshop. This direct apprenticeship shaped his development as a painter, an engraver, and a restorer of old pictures. He did not merely learn to observe; he learned the mechanics of reproduction and the precision required for restoration. His skill set was built on this foundation of disciplined, inherited technique.
Notable Works and Subjects
Dallinger von Dalling’s output centers on the intersection of pastoral life and animal portraiture. His focus remained fixed on the mechanics of rural existence, specifically the relationship between livestock and their environment. This is evident in works such as Woman in a Stable with a Cow and Calf, dated c. 1817, which captures a quiet, domestic moment within a farm setting. He did not merely observe animals; he placed them within specific, functional landscapes. His ability to render these subjects is confirmed by the presence of his work in the Belvedere in Vienna, specifically his depiction of A Herdsman driving Cows across a Brook.
The artist’s technical range extended to landscape and animal painting, often merging the two to create cohesive scenes of the Austrian countryside. Around 1831, he produced Cowherd and Cows passing a brook, works that emphasize the movement of cattle through natural terrain. These pieces demonstrate a commitment to the physical reality of the pastoral scene rather than an idealized version of it. His later work, Landscape with Cows and Shepherds from 1843, shows a continued preoccupation with these themes until the end of his career. He was also a skilled engraver and restorer, skills that required a precise understanding of form and texture in both animal and landscape subjects.
