A Life of Wandering and Witness Born in the textile town of Lodz, Poland, Jankel Adler lived a life defined by movement and the heavy shadows of history. His early years were marked by a restless migration, beginning with a move to Belgrade in 1912, where he first learned the delicate craft of engraving under the guidance of his uncle. This period of training laid the foundation for a hand that would later master many mediums. By 1914,

he had found himself in Germany, living in Barmen near his sister and studying at the college of arts and crafts.
