Early Life, Family and Artistic Training In the city of Kraków, Poland, the child Jan Matejko entered a world shaped by the quiet rhythms of music and the heavy weight of history. He was born on June 24, 1838, into a household where learning was a constant presence. His father, Franciszek Ksawery Matejko, was a tutor and a music teacher who had traveled from the Czech lands.
