Life and Career
Josef Meyenberg was a German painter and vocational teacher. Born in Lamspringe, Germany, he was the son of a master carpenter who produced Art Nouveau furniture. After completing his schooling in Lamspringe, Meyenberg trained as a carpenter in his father's workshop from 1905 to 1908. He later attended the craft and art school in Hildesheim. Between 1910 and 1914, he worked as an interior designer in Hannover while attending drawing courses. Following his service as a soldier in the German Alpine Corps, he returned to his father's workshop before studying in Berlin, where he earned a degree as a vocational teacher.
His teaching career included a position in Limburg an der Lahn and later as a senior vocational teacher in Osnabrück starting in 1928. In the early 1930s, he established an atelier in Hüde at the Dümmer Lake in the Rabbingschen Haus alongside his friend, the sculptor Fritz Szalinski. Meyenberg remained in this studio until his death. After retiring in 1958, he moved to Bad Essen, where he died in 1977.
Artistic Focus and Exhibitions
Meyenberg's oil paintings and watercolors were primarily dedicated to the moor and heath landscapes of Lower Saxony, particularly the area surrounding the Dümmer Lake. His work was influenced by the landscape painter Otto Modersohn and his circle, though his style remained untouched by the Expressionism of that era. His works have been exhibited in various locations, including Breslau, Hildesheim, Bremen, Osnabrück, Braunschweig, Hannover, Oldenburg, and Diepholz. His art is held in collections such as the Dümmer-Museum in Lembruch and the Kulturgeschichtliches Museum in Osnabrück.
