Early Life and Family Roots William Taylor Copeland was born in London, United Kingdom, in 1797, the son of William Copeland, a partner at Josiah Spode II’s Stoke Potteries, and Mary Fowler. His lineage traced back to Staffordshire pottery families with deep roots in Stoke-on-Trent's ceramic heritage. Spode empire. This formative experience would profoundly shape his future endeavors as a businessman and leader of Copeland & Sons.
