His early years were marked by a sense of displacement, moving from Little Baddow to Hampstead, a movement that mirrored the shifting social landscapes he would later document. The loss of his father, a painter and etcher, when Tony was on
ly eight months old, left a void that was filled by the steadfast presence of his mother, Effie Irene Pearce. This early encounter with loss and the complexities of family structure would eventually find its way into the subtle, often melancholic undertones of his photographic work.
