His early life, steeped in the Congregationalist traditions of his parents – George Tobey, a carpenter with a penchant for carving animal fig
ures, and Emma Cleveland Tobey – instilled within him an appreciation for craftsmanship and observation. The family’s move to Chicago in 1893 exposed young Mark to a burgeoning urban landscape and, crucially, to the Art Institute of Chicago, where he received his initial formal training.
