He received his formal training at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts after studying at C.V. Nielsen's art school. His education further expanded in Paris at the Académie des Beaux-Arts, where he studied under Jean-Léon Gérôme.
Madsen was a central figure among the Skagen Painters, having arrived in the fishing village of Skagen during a transformative period in Danish culture. His work from the late 19th century demonstrates a vitality in his portraits, and his time in Paris saw him influenced by the Barbizon school.
